Candle Making Exposed
To Fragrance Or Not To Fragrance is the key choice faced by many Professional Candle Makers. You can be forgiven for thinking that all candles are the same. This is not the case. Most Candle Makers are conscious of cost. They try to find ever more cost effective ways to make and supply candles to businesses and to the public.
If you cut a candle in half, you will often find an inner centre or core. This core can be made up of various waxes, but is quite often Paraffin, (the cheapest wax). Even of those that aren’t, most are not fragranced all the way through. Most Professional Candle Makers only fragrance around the outer edge of the candle. As the wax melts, it is impossible to tell, except that the fragrance might seem to fade somewhat. This is not something that is well known by the general public. This usually applies to expensive branded candles too. When you spend your hard earned cash on a candle, you expect it to be worth what you paid.
When I started my journey into Candle Making, I wanted to offer the customer something special. Luxurious, attractive, yet value for money. Whilst Glorious candles are not the cheapest, they are very good value for money. Made using premium, quality fragrances, they are scented all the way through the candle, not just around the outside. This means a higher cost to us, and ultimately, less profit. High quality fragrance is very expensive! Helping the planet, and providing top quality candles that are safe, is more important to me than high profits.
I use only the best ingredients, high quality vessels, and sustainable Plant Waxes. (Not soy, which currently isn’t fully sustainable). This is because demand has increased rapidly, as so many people look for more natural alternatives. Sadly, the vast quantities currently needed, mean higher prices paid to the farmer to grow it. Because farmers in these countries are poor, they often choose profit over land. It is then raised to the ground to make way for more profitable soy.
I support various charities through my business, and so 10p from every product sold goes to my chosen charity Dogs4Good. They provide and train assistance dogs for the disabled and for other people who need them. We think this is well worth supporting, and makes a real difference in peoples lives who would otherwise be limited.
All our candles are tested by us for safety and are legally compliant. We recommend that you read our other blogs on ‘How to burn a candle correctly’, and ‘Unsafe additions to candles’. I hope that you enjoy them, and that you find them interesting and informative.
